Berlin Kupferstichkabinett, September 1, 2023. A man who carved his genius through wood and metal. It was an exhibition that impacted my understanding of art. Most probably it has even changed my perception of modern art market and made me value the skills and dedication over contemporary “branding”. While we perceive contemporary art as a series of visual production that is recognisable to the least enlightened viewer by repeatable elements involvement, this exhibition has reminded me that we have absolutely forgotten about artists value in any artisanship. The art society has developed a hardly noticeable tint of disaffection towards those who work in illustration and design. While Dürer made majority of his work for different publications during his career as a printmaker and painter, he was to become one of the greatest artists of his time. Times may change but values should not be forgotten.
